FAQs

We acknowledge that there are some questions that you may want answering before you decide on whether to pursue this any further.

We hope that some of these are answered below, as well as clearing up any old fashioned, stereotypical views about firefighters in our Frequently Asked Questions section.

Q Women aren't strong enough to be firefighters are they?

A The old idea that only well-built men are suitable to become firefighters is nonsense. Strength is an important part of firefighting but this can be achieved by the majority of men and a large number of women with the correct training. (For further information on strength and fitness, please click here read the "Fitness advice for the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service".)

Q I don't fancy working in a male dominated environment

A It's true to say that the majority of firefighters are men. This shouldn't dissuade you though as times are changing and we are receiving more and more applications from women wanting to be firefighters. We cannot, however, improve things without your help and it is really important that our firefighters reflect the communities they serve. We would also love to have more female firefighters to act as role models for girls and women in Nottinghamshire.

Q I have a family and would find it hard to work unsociable shifts as my partner also works full-time.

A We recognise the benefits of helping people to strike a positive a balance between home and working life and are committed to achieving a family-friendly working environment. For this reason, flexible working patterns that take childcare issues into account are always considered. We currently have female firefighters who are also the primary carer of children who have altered their working times in order to accommodate childcare needs. All fire stations now operate a self-roster system which allows greater flexibility in this area.

Q Can I get any help with childcare costs?

A Yes you can. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has a childcare voucher scheme. Joining this scheme does not make a difference to any other fire service benefits , which should give you peace of mind.

Q What about maternity leave?

A NFRS has some of the best maternity leave conditions in the public sector, which is something we are very proud of.

Q I'm ambitious and want to get on in my career. Can I do that as a firefighter?

A In a word, YES! If you so wish. Career progression is clear and achievable if you want to put the work in to achieve the required standard. NFRS has an almost constant need to train new managers to meet the Service demands. Our own Chief Fire Officer Frank Swann started as a firefighter 26 years ago and has worked his way up to the highest position attainable within our service. Or you may want to click here to read our "Recruitment Information" booklet, which has answers to lots of frequently asked questions and outlines the firefighter recruitment selection process.
