Overview of the role
Support staff
Few people realise the amount of work that takes place behind-the-scenes in order to get things done at 'the sharp end' of an operational emergency service. Support staff working in non-uniformed roles are just as important as firefighters in keeping the service running smoothly and professionally.
firefighters would not be able to do their jobs properly without the support of colleagues working in the variety of roles they perform from Transport Management, Payroll and Media Services to Finance, Community Safety and Human Resources, to name but a few.

Control staff
Firefighters are clearly essential to the service we provide, but without the staff in the control room they would not know when and where they were needed. The primary function of control operators is to receive emergency calls from the public, and then mobilise firefighters, appliances and other equipment to deal with those incidents...
The staff are currently based in the Control Centre located at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters at Bestwood Lodge in Arnold, Nottingham. The control centre is equipped with a fully computerised system for receiving and recording emergency calls. Control staff work a rotating shift pattern, averaging 42 hours a week across days, nights, weekends and bank holidays.
When we recruit, we look for people who have a confident telephone manner, good keyboard skills and the ability to think and communicate quickly and clearly. We also need people who have had experience of working in a team environment and who are able to respond positively to pressure by working effectively in stressful situations.
