Retained
Retained firefighters are vital for providing cover in our rural areas, responding to incidents just like wholetime firefighters, but in a slightly different way. Retained firefighters usually have a main job outside of the fire and rescue service, or they may be unemployed or working as a volunteer. Retained firefighters may be employed locally and their employer would allow them to respond from work. We especially require those who could offer cover between 08:00 and 18:00, or parts of that period. This might include shift workers, night workers, parents who are available from 09:00 – 15:00 and local self-employed trade’s people. It is important to note retained firefighters are required to provide 12 hours of continuous cover when they are on duty.
Eligibility
Retained firefighters must
- Live or work within five minutes of their local fire station in order to respond to call outs quickly.
- Be a minimum of 18 years old on appointment
- Be of good character
- Be a level of fitness and strength to undertake duties
- Be able to pass a medical, fitness and eyesight test.
Being on call
Retained firefighters carry an alerter. They let the fire station know when they are available so they can respond immediately to emergency calls at any time.
Duties can include:
- Responding to emergency calls.
- Delivering community fire safety information - this could include giving information to businesses, schools and people who are vulnerable to fire, through to engaging with young people including those people who deliberately set fires.
- Reducing risks and hazards in the community by identifying health and safety issues.
Retained firefighters receive the same training as their full-time colleagues and attend all the same type of incidents. Training or 'drilling' as it is known within the service happens once a week on a set day (say every Monday night for example). Retained firefighters are paid a retaining fee for making themselves available for operational incidents throughout the year and then they are paid an hourly rate as and when they are required to respond to alerts.
