Nottingham Pride, Mela and Caribbean Carnival

The Service has attended various festivals throughout the summer including Nottingham Mela, Pride and Caribbean Carnival. At the above festivals the Service has promoted its careers, raised money for The Fire Fighters Charity, built relations with the community and provided fire safety information. Please see our Response magazine article below for further details.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has supported some major festivals in Nottingham this summer as well as attending and sponsoring the popular Nottingham Pride. Attendance at Mela, the Caribbean Carnival and Nottingham Pride raised £250 for The Firefighters Charity through the sale of children's firefighter helmets.  The events also gave the service valuable opportunities to engage with the community, raise awareness of its role and promote a positive image of the fire and rescue service as a possible career.  The importance of fire safety in the home was also highlighted.  Pictured (left to right at Nottingham Pride ACFO John Buckley, Payroll Manager Jackie Haughton, Equality and Diversity Assistant Tom Briggs, Finance and Payroll Officer Alison Marriott and Station Manager Richard Cropley stood in front of the NFRS marquee.

Firefighter For a Day Events

Several Firefighter For a Day Events have taken place in the first half of this year, which have involved participants undertaking physical firefighter fitness tests in full fire kit and learning about the career and recruitment process through a presentation. These events have been focused towards under represented groups in our workforce, however many of the events have been open to everyone. The Service has undertaken a survey of these events and some of the results include:

  • 86% of attendees describing the event as very useful
  • 90% of attendees saying that the trainers were easily understood
  • 100% of attendees saying they would recommend the event to their friends and family.

Further comments have included: "I thought it was an amazing day and they pitched it perfectly to give an idea of what their training involves and the work they do. I really enjoyed it, thanks for organizing it".

Careers Talks

The Service has also undertaken many careers talks/presentations in local schools and colleges and other organisations to educate the community on the fire service and its careers, the firefighter recruitment process and build community relations. This work is of great importance as it enables students to make a more informed choice of career. Some of the schools and colleges the Service has worked with include Nottingham Academy Secondary School, Castle College, Sutton College, Djanogly School, West Nottinghamshire College, Valley School, Portland College and RNIB College. Other organisations the Service has undertaken careers talks with include Remploy and Shaw Trust who are organisations supporting disabled people amongst other groups in finding work.

Community Safety Events

The Service has also undertaken many community safety events such as attendance at the Riverside Festival and schools talks on many subjects from fire safety in the home to bonfire and firework safety.
